Willie’s Swamp Shack

In the heart of the Aquarium’s renovated Seven Rivers Gallery, among the black water, cypress trees and Spanish moss, Willie’s Swamp Shack is a treat for Aquarium visitors. Motion-activated sensors bring us “Willie,” an onscreen storyteller from nearby Buffalo City who appears to stand in the shack doorway to warn visitors about snakes and gators, and interpret the cultural and natural history of the region.

Alligator Habitat

Visitors to the Aquarium always look forward to seeing the large gators in the naturally-lighted conservatory. Alligator Habitat features large acrylic windows that wrap around a 500-gallon pool and simulated mud bank. Two to three alligators (up to five feet) typically call the exhibit home, along with large snapping turtles and several large carp.

Lionfish

Lionfish is a new 400-gallon saltwater aquarium that features six to eight exotic lionfish, displayed in the newly-renovated saltwater gallery. The exhibit is viewed from three sides, offering close-up views of these beautiful but venomous tropical fishes. Lionfish are invasive, and began showing up off the North Carolina coast less than twenty years ago.

Exhibit sponsors ($5,000 level and above) are recognized with naming plaques adjacent to their sponsored feature, along with permanent recognition on the Aquariums’ Donor Exhibits — displayed at all three Aquariums.
