Sea Turtles

SEA TURTLES

Sea turtles are among the Aquarium’s most popular feature animals, and the hatchling display at Fort Fisher invites interaction and learning. A young loggerhead turtle greets visitors as they enter the heart of the Aquarium, and staff and volunteers working in the display provide interpretation about the turtles’ plight along the North Carolina coast.

Loggerhead sea turtles nest on local beaches, and Aquarium staff are involved in helping and protecting this threatened species. The exhibit features a comfortable home for a loggerhead hatchling, graphic interpretive panels and a life-sized adult bronze turtle—perfect for photo opportunities!

Young Loggerhead sea turtles are always a delight for visitors.

  • Loggerhead sea turtles are one of five species found in the Atlantic.

  • Each summer, nests are laid on NC beaches—each yielding dozens of 3-inch hatchlings after about 70 days.

  • Aquarium staff are permitted to work with the turtles, and collaborate with other agencies and NC wildlife resources.

Sponsorship of this exhibit has a term of ten years. The sponsor will be recognized with appropriate signage at the exhibit for this term. Additionally, named recognition is provided on permanent displays at all three NC Aquariums.
