June 2025

Activity level around the Pier increases significantly this month reminding one of a busy beehive with anglers, sightseers and summer campers everywhere.

Perhaps the biggest fishing day of the year occurs Wednesday, June 11 when the annual Fritz Boyden Memorial Youth Tournament gets underway with registration at 7 a.m.

This free, catch and release only event welcomes hundreds of children aged 4 to 16 to Jennette’s as well as Avalon, Nags Head and Outer Banks piers.

Afterwards, everyone is invited to our Oceanview Hall for a picnic-style lunch and an awards ceremony at 1 p.m. Male and female anglers are rewarded with trophies for catching the longest fish in a dozen categories and everyone gets a chance at winning a door prize.

Speaking of catch and release, our education team teaches ethical angling daily to campers and those who sign up for our Family Fishing program offered weekdays all season.

In this two-hour introduction to bottom fishing, participants get everything they need – instruction, tackle, bait and admission from 9 to 11 a.m.

Many anglers fish for sport only and prefer to return fish back to the sea. The other day, Zach from Virginia Beach caught and released six small croakers on one Sabiki rig!
