What does one do with thousands of white packing peanuts that come inside shipments to the Pier Shop?

Well, Manager Tonja Moore (pictured left) was inspired by our second snow event on the Outer Banks last month to create a snowman during down time so Janie Shanks and Pat Lassen (pictured right) jumped into action.

And the best thing about the project was all those pesky peanuts were neatly packaged when Moore went to drop them off at an area shipping store, where they are reused.

Around Jennette’s Pier, staff always looks to reduce, reuse and recycle items to shrink the waste stream. At each workstation, trash cans are paired with recycling bins.

Admissions Manager Lynn Fox loves to cut scrap paper to create note-sized slips of paper they use at the Visitor Services counter.

Near the entrance to our Surfside Classroom, the education team continues to offer recycling for more unique items than just office waste. There, people can recycle Solo cups, bottles and cans, plastic film and mixed variety items such as fruit and drink pouches.

In our kitchen, there are everyday plates, glasses and silverware available for staff functions and other small events like volunteer lunches. These items are run through the washer and stowed away for next time.

Out in the parking lot, there’s one dumpster for recyclables and two for trash.
