August 2025

Heading back to school is so exciting! Before making your list and heading out the door, take a moment to think of the many ways you can create a more sustainable mindset for you and your child that could last a lifetime. Here are some ideas to add to your back-to-school checklist that will make prepping for the school year a little greener.

  • Shop local to reduce packaging.
  • Tote your own reusable bags when shopping for back-to-school supplies and clothes.
  • Skip the plastic baggies and opt for reusable containers.
  • Refuse single-use plastic water bottles and go with a reusable option to use all year long.
  • Reuse backpacks and lunch boxes or look for gently loved ones at a thrift store.
  • Pack reusable napkins, utensils and straws.
  • Choose sustainable furniture and avoid disposable dorm decorations or shop secondhand.

Another great way to get the school year off to a green start is by joining our Back-to-School Beach Cleanup Saturday, Aug. 23, 8-10 a.m. at Ocean Front Park in Kure Beach.

Save the Date for a special back-to-school breakfast at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher Aug. 22 at 8 a.m
