October 2024

Seasoned Outer Bankers relish this time of year. Warm ocean temperatures, hungry fish and less crowded beaches make October a “fintastic” time to cast a line.

Anglers can catch bluefish, croaker, flounder, pompano, puppy drum and trout from the pier, beaches and boats.

The world’s largest surf fishing tournament gets underway Oct. 9-11, when 80 six-person teams hit the beaches for four fishing sessions, fellowship and fun during the 72nd Nags Head Surf Fishing Club Invitational Tournament.

Jennette’s Pier will again serve as the tournament headquarters this year. Every Wednesday through Friday, competitors are invited to Oceanview Hall for dinner and beverages. The tournament concludes Friday night with an awards ceremony.

Next up, the North Carolina Lions Visually Impaired Persons (VIP) Fishing Tournament returns to the Pier on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 18-19.

With its mantra of “Grab a Pole and Change a Life,” this unique event brings dozens of North Carolinian “VIPs” to Jennette’s Tuesday for a day of fishing. A smaller, international event occurs on Wednesday.

“Many of these folks look forward to catching up with their VIP friends each year,” according to Gwen White, event executive director.

Her son, Owen, heads-up activities at Jennette’s Pier with help from his dad Rhett, who previously served as the NC Aquariums Division Director.
