City Nature Challenge
Did you know the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is situated in the maritime forest? Alice Hoffman bequeathed the land that is now the Roosevelt Natural Area to her niece, who was married to Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. They donated 298 acres of maritime forest to the state in 1971 and stipulated the acreage be maintained as a nature preserve and used for wildlife education. Two nature trails take you through this forest - The Roosevelt Nature Trail, accessible from the Aquarium parking lot, and the Alice Hoffman Trail, soon accessible from the Aquarium Boardwalk.
Take a walk down these trails during City Nature Challenge April 26 - April 29 and take pictures of the plants and animals you find. Upload them to iNaturalist to help scientists learn more about biodiversity and coexisting with nature.
