April 2024

Any day now, warm weather will trigger the return of fin fish species to Jennette’s Pier. The annual parade starts with shad who resemble the mighty tarpon with their shape, scales and mouth.

When hooked, they jump and fight hard prompting our ace angler Sammy to call them “baby tarpons.” Next, northern puffers roll in.

Anglers employ special skills to clean these animals who are known for blowing up like a balloon when threatened.

Soon after, the flood gates open wide – sea mullet, speckled trout and puppy drum. Hundreds of students from schools across the state gather here on field trips all April to enjoy this action. They learn about pier fishing, beach biology and even make solar cars and boats.

In Oceanview Hall, an evening of dancing and socializing occurs when the Manteo High School prom unfolds on Saturday, April 20. These juniors and seniors relish a fun evening spent on the oceanfront.

April offers yet another indicator of the season to come. Community events spring to life with fishing tournaments, surf contests, running races and more.

Everyone is invited to attend the Eastern Surfing Association’s Mid Atlantic Regionals Friday through Sunday, April 26-28 starting daily at 8 a.m. See the best amateur surfers compete head-to-head.

Be there, aloha!
