March 2024

In several weeks, spring will blossom along the Outer Banks and Pier staff are busy preparing for our 14th season since reopening in 2011.

The education department added three new team members to help with spring field trips and summer camps. Online registration for these popular week-long camps opens on Monday, April 1 at 9 a.m.

Upstairs in Oceanview Hall, there continues to be plenty of interest in renting the space for weddings, corporate meetings and community events.

The off-season was great and if you add in the scheduled March events, there’s a total of 29 rentals since November. As for spring, we’re ahead of last year’s bookings with 25 reserved.

Old friends visit again when the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Hydraulic Electric Reverse Osmosis Wave Energy Converter or ‘HERO WEC’ returns to Jennette’s Pier for a long-term test deployment facilitated by ECU’s Coastal Studies Institute (CSI).

“CSI staff will anchor the HERO WEC off the south end of the pier during the first available weather window in March,” Director Mike Remige said. “The device will deliver seawater to the pier deck to be converted into drinkable fresh water by reverse osmosis filtration.”

Looking ahead, our popular Family Fishing class is back every weekday of the summer at 9 a.m.
