Earlier this week, a lone bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) swam so close to the beach just south of the Pier, it surprised a nearby dog who turned quickly to view the animal.

These beautiful marine mammals can be seen year-round at Jennette’s as they jump and play in the surf!

Our visitors often get to see dolphins show off when they’re strolling the 1,000-foot-long concrete pier. Dolphins travel together in groups known as pods. Their range runs from New York south to Mexico including the Caribbean.

They breathe air through their blow holes on top of their head and appear to always have a smile on their bottle-shaped beaks filled with conical teeth.

Out on the Pier, several information graphic panels feature these amazing animals. Dolphins prefer warm water but can be found along the Outer Banks throughout the year.

Scientists believe they are highly intelligent and speak to one another with a wide variety of sounds and even with body language. They can grow up to ten feet long. Males live to 50 years old -- females to age 60.

So, the next time you’re strolling the Pier, be sure to keep an eye out for these gregarious animals that call Nags Head waters home.
