October 2023

While September has super surf, October offers anglers a golden opportunity to catch plenty of species from the surf, sounds or piers. These fish are often larger and more plentiful.

Nearly 500 anglers will try their luck during the 71st Annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Club Invitational Tournament held Oct. 6-8.

Eighty, six-person teams fish in two sessions on Thursday and Friday with hopes of accumulating points by catching the most and biggest fish.

Just picture four-wheel drive vehicles backed up to the surf with barefoot anglers engaged in surf fishing with long rods as far as the eye can see.

Headquartered at Jennette’s, social gatherings in Oceanview Hall are on tap Wednesday through Friday evenings. Trophies and tackle are given to the highest scoring men’s, women’s and mixed teams at Friday’s banquet.

Additional awards are handed out for individual largest fish for males and females as well as most team points per session.

There’s also door prizes and raffle giveaways that keep folks until the bitter end. According to club officials, Jennette’s Pier also served as headquarters during the early years of the event.

The 480 participants, dozens of volunteer judges and scorers enjoy happy hours and meals together where fish stories get bigger and bigger and bigger.
