RECYCLE FOR REEFS AT THE AQUARIUM

With farmed oysters available in North Carolina year-round, just about any month is excellent for shucking! Did you know that oyster shell recycling is a vital conservation act? The North Carolina Coastal Federation Oyster Shell Recycling Program collects shells and uses them to build or restore oyster reefs. The benefits of these actions, sometimes called ecosystem services, include providing critical habitat, reducing erosion, and cleaning our estuaries.

On the Outer Banks, the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island is now a proud oyster shell collection site! Located in our overflow parking lot, a collection trailer is now available. Drop off your cleaned shells, and know they’ll find a good home giving back to our local estuaries. A monofilament recycling container is also available next to the oyster trailer for fishing line.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

We have some popular special activities returning in August! Aqua Tots is geared towards kids ages 2 – 5 and includes 45 minutes of stories, crafts, and hands-on learning. Gyotaku “fish printing” introduces participants to the ancient art form while they create their own Gyotaku t-shirt to take home.

Check our calendar of special activities to learn more.
