August 2023

Anglers had hot fishing for king mackerel last month and chances are strong for more action in August.

Father and son, Courtney and Jimmy Haynes of Mechanicsville, Va., fished four days before landing a prized 38-pounder.

Jimmy, age 11, caught the citation-sized keeper while live bait pin-rig fishing from the end of Jennette’s Pier.

“It took off for five minutes,” he said.

Courtney, a veteran angler, was thrilled.

The pair shared a big embrace after getting their photo taken.

Courtney admitted it wasn’t easy keeping his son engaged in pin-rig fishing because it’s such a large investment of time and money.

After it was all said and done, Jimmy said, “I’m just ready to go to the beach.”

Speaking of the beach, the summer season peaks this month when the WRV OBX Pro surf contest comes to Jennette’s for Labor Day festivities Aug. 30 to Sept. 3.

Competitors pray for waves and are sometimes blessed with some of the best conditions on the East Coast.

Hundreds if not thousands of spectators line the beach to watch the professional men and women surfers race down the line of breaking waves.

They often perform radical maneuvers including 360s, off the lips, floaters and even the ultimate – tube rides.

Be there, aloha!
