Fifth graders at Hertford Grammar School benefited from our Aquarium Scholars initiative with an outreach program featuring beach critters and squid held on a recent Monday.

ļ»æThe Aquarium Scholars program allows Title I eligible schools to apply for outreach or field trip grants to Jennetteā€™s Pier or an Aquarium location near them.

From shark jaws to squid ink tattoos, these children were treated to a glimpse of coastal sciences without having to leave home.

With ten folding tables, a white board and large tub of supplies, our educators turn two outdoor areas into classrooms. Teachers join the students and seem to enjoy the programs too.

ļ»æOver at Beach Show & Tell, educator Jennifer Ahlbrand kept the kids guessing as they attempted to identify shells, bones and egg cases.

At the Squid Dissection area, Education Curator Christin Brown taught rotating classes about mollusks, invertebrates and squid.

ļ»æWhen cutting begins with shiny scissors, thereā€™s loud squeaks, snorts and laughter. Brown explains how to check the animalā€™s sex in a scientific ā€œgender reveal,ā€ a fun teaching tool created by tenured educator Jenna Livernois.

Again, laughter erupts when ink squirts out. Brown tells them how to use the squid ā€œpen and inkā€ for traditional tattoos.

Nearby, Andrew makes a smiley face on his palm while other classmates canā€™t wait to wash theirs.
