July 2022

Visitors to the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island this summer are finding themselves immersed in a world of native plants and pollinators! During National Pollinator Week, June 20- June 26, 2022, guests and staff celebrated the grand opening of the Aquarium’s Pollinator Garden and Maritime Forest Trail through special outdoor programming and activities focused on sustainable habitat gardening and native pollinators!

Pollinators play an important role in our ecosystems. Bees, flower flies, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinating creatures ensure fruit and seed production for flowering plants and are a crucial link in food webs. To support pollinators, you can plant and protect the native plants they depend on by creating and preserving the habitat they need right in your own backyard. In addition, creating habitat for pollinators will provide you with countless hours of delight as you experience the amazing array of pollinators and wildlife your yard attracts!

The Pollinator Garden and Maritime Forest Trail educational signs and programs were sponsored by an environmental and sustainability grant from Dominion Energy.

Also, don’t forget to join us for fun activities on Shark and Ray Awareness Day on July 14th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.!

Finally, our STAR Center is undergoing some renovations this summer, so be sure to check it out in the Press Room on our website!
