Otter pups, a passionate team committed to conservation and enthusiastic visitors were great reasons for Governor Roy Cooper to visit the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher (NCAFF). He and Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) Secretary Reid Wilson explored and engaged in the many habitats and exhibits that make the Aquarium unique. Governor Cooper also stepped in to announce an additional $10 million in state funding for the renovation and expansion of the Aquarium. Since it was last renovated in 2002, NCAFF has welcomed nearly 10 million visitors who have contributed to the wear and tear on the infrastructure The proposed $30 million project would add 20,000 square feet of indoor space and exhibits to enhance accessibility and inclusion. NCAFF hopes to start construction in 2024 and celebrate the Aquarium’s 50th anniversary in 2026 with a newly renovated and expanded facility.
