June 2022

Help us celebrate World Ocean Day on Wednesday, June 8 by learning how you can make positive changes for ocean conservation. At the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island, you can participate in crafts and games as we learn about marine animals and how our oceans impact our daily lives. Take a pledge to protect the ocean to complete your visit.

Nearby at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, get inspired to save our seas by taking a stroll out over the Atlantic and soaking in the endless ocean, salt air and sunshine. Look closely and you may catch a glimpse of frolicking wild bottlenose dolphins or soaring brown pelicans.

Educators from the Aquarium on Roanoke Island and Pier just finished a unique project with third-grade science classes at all five Dare County elementary schools that culminated in planting native trees.

The brainchild of Jennette’s Pier Education Curator Christin Brown, Educator Meredith Fish and the Aquarium’s Outreach Coordinator Rhana Paris, the year-long project taught students about how trees combat climate change.

To wrap up the program, black cherry and scarlet oak trees were planted at each school and watered as the kids absorbed a lesson from Paris.

“We reviewed how to take care of them, and they seemed excited to have their own trees,” she said. The NC Aquarium Society funded the project with a Sustainability grant.
