April 2022

Plan to enjoy one of the North Carolina Aquariums’ many nature trails this month and join the City Nature Challenge, April 29-May 2.

Did you know, the Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is situated in the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, which is mostly maritime forest?

Alice Hoffman bequeathed the land that is now the Roosevelt Natural Area to her niece, who was married to Theodore Roosevelt Jr. They donated 298 acres of maritime forest to the state in 1971 and stipulated the

acreage be maintained as a nature preserve and used for nature and wildlife education and estuarine studies.

Two nature trails at the Aquarium take you through the maritime forest. The Roosevelt Nature Trail is accessible from the parking lot, and the Alice Hoffman Trail is accessible from the Saltmarsh Boardwalk.

Behind the Aquarium at Fort Fisher, the Basin Trail follows 2.2 miles of incredible vistas, flora and fauna. Another out-and-back trail is the Fort Fisher to Bald Head Island Beach Walk. The

17.6-mile route is great for fishing, hiking and trail running.

The Aquarium on Roanoke Island invites you to the Bird Trail on its grounds. This trail delivers educational information and includes hands-on activities focused on indigenous birds. Also at Roanoke Island, the Pollinator Garden trail journeys through regional wildflower environments.
