Aquariums celebrate women in STEM ⚛️

March 2022

The North Carolina Aquariums joined with institutions around the world to applaud and encourage women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) during International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Feb. 11.

Despite a shortage of skilled people in most technology fields, women account for only 28% of engineering graduates and 40% of graduates in computer science and informatics worldwide, according to the United Nations.

At the North Carolina Aquariums, our women in STEM are scientists, biologists, conservationists, researchers and veterinarians. They inspire our visitors to be advocates for our aquatic environments and animals.

The amazing work of the women in this field includes veterinary science, shark research, butterfly and frog conservation, marine animal husbandry and enrichment, and sea turtle care. (Video below.)

While International Day of Women and Girls in Science is February 11, the Aquariums celebrate year-round. N.C. Aquarium on Roanoke Island

is hosting a Women in Science event March 12 with presentations from local professionals, activities to help understand career paths, and videos in the aquarium’s Neptune’s Theater. The N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher will host a Women in Science event in September.

Do you know someone interested in science? The Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is looking for husbandry and education interns. Aquarium Internships offer women and girls access and participation in science, and empower them as agents of change.

The N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores hosts a Carnival to Combat Climate Change April 2. The free event was created by one of the aquarium’s teen

volunteers, Kaylee, as a project for a youth summit she attended in 2021. NOAA, in conjunction with Coastal Ecosystem Learning Centers (CELC) Network, provided a grant to help fund the event, which aims to engage youth in mitigating the effects of climate change on coastal areas.
