September 2024

Ride into September with tropical storm waves that form offshore and break gracefully and sometimes violently along the Outer Banks. Jennette’s Pier has emerged as a magnet for these waves and two unique events celebrate surfing, which dazzled viewers during the Olympics this summer.

The Eastern Surfing Association will hold its annual championships, the Easterns, in mid-September. This amateur surfing association features head-to-head competitions in age groups from Menehune to Grand Legends and everything in between. The best wave riders on the entire East Coast will slog it out in six-person heats to score the most points to land first-place honors.

Come watch these athletes put on a show of natural art. This year’s event runs daily from Sunday through Saturday, Sept. 15-21. Heats run all day starting around 8 a.m. -- weather and waves permitting.

At the same time, a three-day film festival, Surfalorus, will unfold inside the Pier’s Oceanview Hall starting on Monday night, Sept. 16. Live music by Coastal Carolina, the “original southern-fried Hawaiian band,” kicks things off at 6 p.m. The 93-minute showcase film, The Cigarette Surfboard, starts at 7 p.m.

Surfalorus is presented by North Carolina Aquariums and is a partnership between Cucalorus and Dare Arts.

Be there, aloha!
