On a Monday morning late in April, the fish returned to the waters below Jennette’s Pier. It was a cold and blowy day complete with rough seas.

A trio of anglers, each hailing from Virginia, reeled in a nice red drum, a big black drum and broke off a large bluefish, they reported.

Monica Pyles of Warrington, who was fishing with her husband Thomas, revealed that they lured the 24.5 - inch black drum to the bite with a kernel of canned corn.

Yes, a yellow kernel of corn. They were excited it was a legal — sized catch and they planned to eat it that night.

Freddie Kuhn of Dinwiddie had a hard fight with a 33 – inch red drum, which was released unharmed.

That bite set the tone for fishing on the Pier and plenty of people have been giving it a go since those fish photos were posted.

Up until that time, we had seen limited northern puffers and a shad or two. Now, we’re getting more of those along with some small sea mullet and blues. Students visiting on a field trip caught a striped burrfish too!

Just in time for spring fishing season, Jennette’s has increased its daily hours to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
