See Ya Later, Alligators!

Since 2019, we've been a temporary home to four juvenile American Alligators. Born at Alligator Adventure in South Carolina, these animals are moving to new digs at their birthplace to grow up and live the rest of their lives.

We’re turtle-y thrilled to introduce diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) in our Seven Rivers Gallery, where the alligators formerly resided.

The NC Aquariums have committed to providing a life-long home to as many animals in our care as possible. These diamondback terrapins will have plenty of space to live and grow for the rest of their lives. Stay tuned to learn more about the great story these turtles will tell!

Small but Mighty

We’re also welcoming a pygmy rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius) to Seven Rivers! Born in human care at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in 2015, we're so excited to have him help us tell the story of the smallest species of rattlesnake in the United States.

Found throughout the southeast, this species grows to about 2 feet long. Fun fact: their color and pattern vary depending on where they live. Pygmy rattlesnakes from Hyde, Beaufort, and Pamlico counties are more red or pink than their relatives elsewhere!
