And ‘fishing is catching’🎣

August 2021

Summer fun peaks this month, with fishing, camps, and special events (including free beach yoga). We typically see the warmest ocean temperatures of the year about now.

Sometimes that entices offshore fish species inshore. These can include mahi-mahi — also known as dolphinfish. Only a handful of mahi have been caught from Jennette’s in the past decade, but it’s pretty cool when these bright green-and-blue sleek

swimmers come over the rail. And in July there was a solid king mackerel bite. Always a thrill!

Meanwhile, our campers are having plenty of luck with small catches like croaker, sand perch, pigfish, and pinfish. These youngsters appear pleased every time!

The kids, or “groms,” also learn to ride waves in our surf camps. These week-long camps are extremely popular, and the campers seem to have a blast.

At the other end of the spectrum, the jet set of surfing will cruise into Nags Head for the WRV OBX Pro contest just in time for Labor Day weekend. These highly skilled and competitive wave riders will vie for prize money and bragging rights.

Sponsor Pacifico offers samples, swag, and good times. WRV also has a pop-up shop with commemorative items including posters, hats and tees.

Contest runs Wednesday thru Sunday, Sept., 1 - 5 with surfing on the best wave days.
