July 2021

#Winning The North Carolina Aquariums are honored to be recognized among the nation’s tops, according to a recent polling for USA Today’s Readers’ Choice 10Best awards. Together, the state’s aquariums at Fort Fisher, at Pine Knoll Shores, and on Roanoke Island, along with Jennette’s Pier,

landed fourth among the best aquariums in the country. We were nominated by a panel of experts and went head-to-head with 20 other outstanding organizations in a public vote. In 2019, the North Carolina Aquariums placed seventh in the same competition.

Fins up! It’s time to celebrate an animal critically important to ocean health, but widely misunderstood. The SHARK!

Sadly, more than 30 percent of shark species are threatened with extinction. Shark and Ray Awareness Day on July 14 is an excellent time to learn more.

Visit the NC Aquariums’ Spot A Shark USA site to see how divers are sharing their photos to help us discover more about sand tiger shark behavior. In addition, the aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores will offer in-person and virtual Shark Week programs July 10-16.

You can also catch shark researchers from the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher talking about sand tiger sharks on “Ninja Sharks 2: Mutant Rising,” airing July 16 at 8 p.m. during Discovery’s Shark Week programming.

Go with the flow at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island’s new temporary traveling exhibit, “Water’s Extreme Journey!” The interactive outdoor maze invites visitors to become a raindrop traveling from inland to the ocean. The exhibit will run from now through late October.

Here’s an aquarium fist-bump to the more than 600 visitors to Roanoke Island who pledged to help the oceans on World Oceans Day. Thank you for taking positive steps for ocean health and the preservation of our ocean habitats.

All three aquariums are offering family-friendly Paint Nights in July. Supplies and instructions are included, and themes change each session. Space is limited, with preregistration required.

Sellouts happen, especially during busy holiday weeks and rainy days! Don’t let it happen to you. Plan ahead for your aquarium visit. Our new ticketing system is designed to provide you with a better visitor experience. Purchase your ticket or make a member reservation in advance.
