July 2021

Pier life thrives this month – think fish chewing on pilings, campers catching waves, and seaside celebrations in Oceanview Hall.

First off, thanks to our partners at The Outer Banks Hospital, we have free yoga

all five Thursdays starting July 1 at 8 a.m. Seasoned yoga professional Amy Klauser will lead the way.

Later that week on Sunday, July 4, take in Independence Day fireworks from the Pier or our surrounding beaches. They will be launched from Nags Head Pier at 9:25 p.m.

Try your hand this month at fishing the pilings, where sheepsheads, black drum and Atlantic spadefish are often found devouring barnacles and mussels.

Anglers bait up with clams, sand fleas, and baby blue crabs to lure the large fish to bite. Once hooked up, these heavy-weight fish fight like Tyson.

Summer campers feel the force of Mother Nature as they experiment with wave riding. Once lined up, breakers pick them up to push them in.

Speaking of wave riding, the OBX Skim Jam, set for July 17-18, draws the best riders from the mid-Atlantic.

These athletes first run down the beach berm before throwing down their boards and jumping on for a ride. They typically bank off the incoming wave and ride it back to the beach.
