June 2021

Let’s go deeper to protect wild places and animals as we approach World Ocean Day on June 8. Did you know the North Carolina Aquariums place acoustic receivers at shipwreck sites along our state’s coast? The receivers collect information about tagged sand tiger sharks (and other tagged marine species). When the receivers are retrieved,

the stored data helps our conservation scientists understand more about these vulnerable animals and how they use these critical habitats. In this image, scientific divers from the aquarium at Roanoke Island change a receiver on a Cape Hatteras shipwreck.

North Carolina Aquariums vet Dr. Emily Christiansen shared more about our shark research in a Science Brief spot during a collaboration with OCEARCH’s Expedition Carolinas. Check it out below.

Go live with the aquarium at Fort Fisher as we highlight some of our dedicated professionals during our “Women in Science” week, June 7-11. Learn more about their work and impact for animals and the ocean. Follow us on Instagram to join us for the live-streams.

Make a colorful splash with creative fun under the sea. The aquariums at Pine Knoll Shores and Fort Fisher host family-friendly Paint Nights at their sites beginning in late June. Supplies and instructions are included, and themes change each session. Space is limited, with preregistration required.

Going, going, gone!

Only a few spots remain for aquarium summer camps at all sites.

Plan ahead for your aquarium visit. Purchase your ticket or make a member reservation in advance as sellouts happen. For a better guest experience, timed entry is required at all three aquariums– Fort Fisher, Pine Knoll Shores and Roanoke Island.

The aquariums care about our communities. Fort Fisher will host a mobile blood drive on June 24. Schedule a time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
