May 2021

Otters! So much joy and wonder conveyed in a single word gleefully exclaimed multiple times a day at the North Carolina Aquariums. Take time to celebrate these wonderful creatures on World Otter Day (May 26).

Our otter romps — that’s what you call a group of otters (cute, right?) — at the three aquariums delight visitors daily with their playful personalities and furry physiques. Well-being is a primary focus of the expert care provided these loveable animals.

This past winter Roanoke Island created a forever home for a rescued North American river otter, Olive, and slowly introduced her to habitat mates, Banks and Finn, to ensure the best environment for all. Recently, Asta, the 13-year-old mother of the Asian small-clawed otter family at Fort Fisher, showed behavior changes. Her professional care and health teams assessed her needs. With specialized treatment, her appetite and energy are now returning to normal levels.

May’s milder temps have you itching for some outdoor adventures? Discover more than you expected, kayaking, beach combing, and marsh mucking with educators at Pine Knoll Shores. Indoor fun is more your speed? Join a tour to explore behind the scenes at the aquarium near Atlantic Beach.

They’re back! Live and in-person, aquarium summer camps return. Spots at each Aquarium — Roanoke Island, Pine Knoll Shores and Fort Fisher — are limited, with some camps already sold out.

Know a child dreaming of working at the aquarium or with aquatic animals? Virtual Ocean Careers Summer Camp gives campers aged 11-14 the chance to explore the field, hear from working professionals, and learn why these jobs are so important.

Earth Day kicked off this year’s Party for the Planet. If you missed out on the April activities you can still celebrate with friends and family. The best part is, it doesn’t matter where you live. Fort Fisher is hosting a Party for the Planet: Virtual Trash Pickup at a park, trail, or neighborhood near you through May 21.

And the winner is…! The North Carolina Aquariums were once again nominated for the 2021 10Best Readers’ Choice travel awards. We placed seventh in 2019. You can help us make the list again. Vote once a day until May 24.

Sellouts happen! Let your friends and family know to purchase their aquarium tickets or make a member reservation in advance of their visit. Remember, timed entry is required at all three aquariums and admission is no longer sold at the door.
