April 2021

Six years after the first Earth Day, the North Carolina Aquariums got their start as Marine Resource Centers along our state’s coast. In the 45 years since, tens of millions of visitors have explored our three locations, discovering natural wonders and learning why a healthy planet matters to all of us.

Saving animals and wild spaces can be better accomplished when caring turns to action. That is why our teams invest in the younger generations through education.

Adventuring up the Coast Virtual Summer Camp offers children, K-5th grades, an opportunity to “travel” virtually to all four N.C. Aquarium sites. Meet animals, discover nature in each location, and learn more about conservation projects to save animals. Games, crafts and marine experts round out the week of fun.

Older kids, ages 11-14, can explore a career in marine biology during Virtual Ocean Careers Summer Camp. Campers hear from working professionals in the field and learn why these jobs are so important for protecting the ocean.

Each aquarium will also host limited in-person summer camps. This registration opens for Pine Knoll Shores on April 1, for Fort Fisher on April 7, and for Roanoke Island on April 12.

You too can take steps for Earth Day and your health during the 2021 Race for the Planet. Pick a virtual race option from three race distances (5K, 10K and 13.1 miles) and compete with family and friends from anywhere, April 16-25. Are you near Fort Fisher? A few spots remain for the optional in-person race with wave start times on April 18. Proceeds benefit green initiatives at N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

As thoughts turn to warmer weather and beach visits, please remember advance tickets and member reservations for timed entry are required at all three aquariums — Fort Fisher, Pine Knoll Shores and Roanoke Island. Times and days do sell out, especially on weekends and rainy days.
