January 2021

A new year begs for some warm fuzzies, and we don’t just mean our adorable otters. Keep reading for all the goodness the North Carolina Aquariums bring to January.

Our team is always committed to conservation. Pine Knoll Shores and Roanoke Island are currently giving care to ten cold-stunned sea turtles rescued off our coast. In 2020, the aquariums collectively cared for and returned more than 300 cold-stunned sea turtles to their ocean home and continued conservation research for sand tiger sharks. In addition, Fort Fisher raised and released 490 endangered Carolina gopher frogs.

Speaking of sharks, virtual Gills Club offers an opportunity for girls, ages 10-14, to explore science and ocean conservation with the help of female scientists. The club is free with registration. The next meeting is Jan. 16.

The aquariums will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18, with ½-price admission. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. Timed ticketing and reduced-capacity limits will apply, and masks are required. And on that day, all three aquarium sites will collect donations for local food banks. Roanoke Island will continue to accept items through Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, as part of their annual Ton of Love Food Drive.

This month, meet one of our special friends, the Chesapeake Mermaid. She is as real as a mermaid gets, and loves nature too! Join us as we talk with her and learn how she protects her home. The interactive series offers changing themes and live-animal cameos. All ages welcome! Jan. 30, Feb. 27, Mar. 27. Register for one or all.

This winter, cozy up with even more aquarium adventures with a whole range of virtual learning, from creature features to behind the scenes tours, and from storytimes to animal cameos.
