After a year that could best be described as a massive tinsel tangle, we know the importance of resilience and hope. This month the N.C. Aquariums are reminded that family, caring and kindness make the season, any season, brighter.

Fort Fisher opens the long-awaited “Otters on the Edge" habitat on Dec. 1. It’s a new home for a close-knit family of Asian small-clawed otters. We expect otterly adorable Asta, Oscar, Titan and Ray to delight all who meet them.

Sharks need love too. Caring for these animals entails thoughtful planning and a team approach. Check out Jolene, a resident Pine Knoll Shores sand tiger, as she receives expert veterinary care.

Roanoke Island celebrates an annual Outer Banks tradition to help furry friends waiting to find forever homes. The Aquarium invites donations of pet food and supplies to the Santa Paws Pet Supply Drive through Jan. 3. For logistical reasons, donations can only be accepted at the Aquarium in Manteo or Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head.

Not all activities can be in person this year. Luna’s Holiday Special entertains your crew with an exclusive and virtual view of our favorite albino alligator and her Aquarium friends on Dec. 12. Register now to see the Fort Fisher team provide festive enrichment for Luna, the otter family, and a rescued bald eagle. Additional virtual adventures are offered throughout the year.

If you plan to visit the Aquarium soon, please remember to purchase your tickets or make advance reservations online. All three Aquariums will be closed on Friday, Dec. 25.
