Open or closed? Many are asking the questions of the Aquariums and Pier. The state of North Carolina has moved into Phase 2 of Safer at Home, in an effort to continue to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Under that order the Aquariums remain closed and have not yet received an opening date. But there's a strong chance Jennette’s Pier, in Nags Head, is moving toward opening soon.
Even closed, we continue to move our mission forward. Aquarium staff are still working hard to provide excellent care to our animal family, and to offer educational opportunities to our public family online. We are thrilled to announce the creation of virtual summer camps that will include creative content from each Aquarium and the Pier. Registration for these camps has already begun.
Additionally, we're delighted to report an incredible opportunity experienced by one of our staff, North Carolina Aquarium Division Veterinarian Emily Christiansen. Christiansen took on the responsibility of caring for three orphaned otter pups, and then worked with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to get the pups to the North Carolina Zoo. While there, the otters will prepare for release back into the wild. A heartwarming story, with promise of a happy outcome!
