"I bet I catch a bigger one than you!" It's common to hear that around the Pier this month, especially with two half-day fishing tournaments scheduled.
Around 75 anglers are expected to attend our 9th Annual Family Fishing Tournament, set for Saturday, June 8, at 7 a.m. Participants compete for first place prizes in 12 categories.
In addition, help us celebrate World Oceans Day by joining the Pier to Pier Beach Cleanup that day, starting at noon.
A second, similar event, the Fritz Boyden Memorial Youth Fishing Tournament, begins early on Wednesday, June 19. Hosted by four ocean piers located in Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, this competition gets children ages 4 to 16 out fishing for the day.
Catch and release is encouraged in both events so future generations can also enjoy fishing. Neither tourney scores skates, rays or sharks, so please return them to the sea unharmed.
Need gear to get tournament-ready? Swing by the Pier Shop, where you’ll find everything for fishing, including hooks, line and sinkers. A wide variety of colorful Jennette’s Pier T-shirts are stocked up too.
Another neat gift item, new this season: 4Ocean bracelets. For every one sold, 4Ocean pledges to remove one pound of trash from the ocean or beaches.
