January 2019

RELEASE THE FISH, SAVE THE MEMORIES

Here are our resolutions for 2019!

  1. Make things cleaner and “greener” around the Pier. This spring, our education department will deploy 12 brand-new, bright-blue recycling containers and 42 cig-butt recycling tubes in our parking lot.
  2. Conserve our fishery. Staff will continue to educate anglers on the importance of handling fish carefully. Remember to use wet hands or a damp rag when holding a fish, and follow our motto: Reel, Record, Release. Reel it in, record a quick digital or mental image, and release it safely!
  3. Protect our marine mammals. Now that winter’s cold weather has arrived, Pier staff are gearing up for another year of assisting the OBX Marine Mammal Stranding Network. “Hauled-out” seals often get us rolling in January, but whale and dolphin strandings are possible too.
  4. Keep the experience fresh. A new exhibit will go on display this winter in the main lobby of the Pier house. “Moe,” a re-articulated bottlenose dolphin skeleton, will be suspended from the ceiling, backed up by educational graphics.
  5. Share the love. We welcome visiting Aquarium Scholars on field trips to learn more about our coast's fascinating warm-blooded animals. These playful mammals are often seen frolicking in the surf near our Pier!
