March is a great time to visit Jennette's Pier in Nags Head. Warmer air temperatures entice fish to begin biting later this month, and before long, another ocean fishing season will be underway. Northern puffers and shad typically show up first.
Sightseeing for whales can offer a unique experience at Jennette's if you're here at the right time. Warming ocean waters send these gentle giants heading north, and their spouts or fins can sometimes be seen at the surface. Pretty much year round, folks see bottle-nosed dolphins breaking the surface or playing in swells near the Pier.
With all of this welcome spring activity, the Pier's education staff is geared up and ready for fun. They have two dozen school groups scheduled for field trips this month, including several Aquarium Scholars classes. Students may build a mini wind-turbine, race solar boats, or learn about beach environments.
Be sure to come and visit this month for some spring fishing and sunny-day sightseeing or beach time. Our bathhouse reopens on Good Friday, March 30. The Pier's hours of operation expand to 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. the following day, Saturday, March 31.
